What is History of First Hawaiian Bank (FHB)?

In 1858, local businessmen Charles Reed Bishop and William A. Aldrich established Bishop & Co. This was the first successful banking company under the rules of the independent Kingdom of Hawai’i.

It ran from a basement chamber in “Makee & Anthon’s Building” on Kaʻahumanu Street. On the day Bishop & Co. opened, it received $4,784.25 in deposits. In 1895, Samuel M. Damon purchased Bishop & Co. from Charles Bishop.

In 2001, First Hawaiian Bank purchased Union Bank of California’s branch network on Guam and Saipan. In December, BNP Paribas completed the acquisition of First Hawaiian Bank and its parent firm, BancWest. However, Bank of the West and First Hawaiian Bank continued to function separately.
